Artist Statement:

Throughout my studies at Texas State University I became fascinated with the use of cardboard as a medium.  The long hours I spent staring at a computer screen created a need to find real world textures and materials that defy the digital perfection and redundancy that Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator create. Cardboard offered me a readily accessible material that I could find everywhere. The variation in textures and wear within individual pieces of cardboard seemed limitless, and the ability to shape art out of an overlooked everyday material was perfect.

After creating a number of pieces in my new medium, I came to learn about Picasso’s early use of cardboard. Further investigation led me to the relief work of Frank Stella.   I was drawn by Stella’s use of a limited color pallet, and simple lines to create images. However, it was not until my extensive travels through the West with my band that I found the pallet and style that called to me.

Everywhere we travelled I found forgotten treasures of American history, whether it be an out of fashion western pearl snap shirt with a southwestern color pallet and designs, or a forgotten group of paint-by-number pieces at a yard sale. The landscapes and the color pallet of the west began to invade my thoughts.

Mountain ranges became a group of simple lines and colors. A flower at sunset became a play of light on shapes. I began to create my own paint-by-number pieces by reducing the contours of the natural world into three-dimensional shapes of cardboard.
